A familiar name with echoes to Donegal’s boxing history is on the bill on Thursday night for the finals of the Donegal Novice Championships
Six finals will be boxed off at the Letterkenny Boxing Club gym.
The roster will include Brian Anderson of Twin Towns, who lies up in the Boy 2 50kgs final against Killian Caldwell of Carrigart.
Brian Anderson the third is a grandson of Donegal boxing legend Brian Anderson and a son of Twin Towns BC coach and administrator Brian Anderson, a recent inductee to the County Donegal Boxing Board’s Hall of Fame.
Brian Anderson was one of the foremost proponents of the sweet science in Donegal.
Anderson was the county’s first ever Irish senior titlist when he took the light-welterweight crown in 1965.
While based in London, where he boxed with Middle Row BC, Anderson was selected to compete for Ireland at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, where he lost on a narrow 3-2 split decision to Cambodia’s Nol Touch.
In 1979, he helped to form the Twin Towns BC, the club his grandson is ready to represent in Thursday’s final.
