Three Donegal events have made the ‘Best Adventure Races to do in Ireland in 2023’, which was compiled by Outsider, Ireland’s Adventure Magazine.

The Wild Atlantic Adventure Race, Team Donegal Oil Adventure Challenge and Beyond Adventure Race have all made the shortlist of 14.

“The Wild Atlantic Adventure Race is one of Ireland’s top multi-sport races,” Outsider said. “This race attracts both serious competitors and those looking to experience the beauty of the Donegal coast.”

WAAR has four categories - the 55.5km full route, the 52.5km duathlon, the 56.5km team and the 39km sprint event - where participants run, cycle and kayak their way through. It is based out of CLG Naomh Muire, The Banks, Mullaghdearg, will return on May 13 next.

The Team Donegal Oil Adventure race was held for the first time in 2022 and is expected to take place again in April.

It is described as: “This unique, women-only adventure challenge is a non-competitive introductory event that aims to introduce the incredible world of multi-sport to a new demographic.

“However, this growth has been male-skewed. The Team Donegal Oil Adventure Challenge is trying to balance the scales a bit. On the first running of this event, it took place in the stunning setting around Gartan Adventure Centre.”

The course was a 4km run, a 20km bike, and a 1km kayak. We hope to see this back on the calendar in 2023. Keep an eye on the link below to stay up to date.”

Organized by RaceIreland, the Beyond Adventure Race is a new addition to the calendar. Its inaugural running took place in 2022 and we hope to see it back this coming season. It consists of a run/hike, road biking, kayaking and archery/canyoning.

“Founded in 2021, RaceIreland is a unique events company that organises low environmental impact sporting events including endurance cycling, trail running, and adventure sports,” Outsider said. “Based in stunning Lough Eske, Co Donegal, which is an adventure hot-spot, the race is divided into two disciplines, the 4-hour Sprint and the 8-hour Endurance.”
