The celebrations took place on August 24, which comes 18 months after Russia’s full-scale invasion.

DLDC facilitated the Pray for Ukraine event in the Trinity Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Letterkenny. This was a solemn gathering of people of all faiths who joined in solidarity for the people of Ukraine.

A spokesperson said: "Attendees united in a spirit of compassion and empathy, offering their thoughts and prayers for the well-being and stability of the Ukrainian people.

"The event emphasised the power of unity and empathy, highlighting the deep connections that bind global communities together."

The Donegal Volunteer Centre proudly hosted a thank you event at the Donegal County Museum for Ukrainian volunteers who contributed to Irish society.

A spokesperson said: "The heart-warming gathering showcased the cultural richness of Ukraine while fostering community connections."

Attendees at the event were treated to a blend of music, food, and cultural exploration.

The event started with Ukrainian national anthem as well as minute of silence to honour those who died fighting for independence and those who died in the war with Russia.

Ukrainian refugees who had a guided tour of the museum, they had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the history of the Independence of Ireland as well as the  heritage of Donegal, fostering a deeper sense of connection between the two cultures.

Ukrainian Independence Day marks Ukraine's declaration of independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. On this day,  Ukrainians come together to honour their history, showcase their rich cultural heritage, and commemorate the resilience of their nation. The celebrations serve as a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices that led to Ukraine's sovereignty.
