Henry O’Donnell, supported by the team, made it to shore on the Donegal mainland, making swimming history
RTÉ Archives have shared the footage of the day Henry O’Donnell made swimming history by swimming from Tory Island to the Donegal mainland.
On the video they shared online, which was broadcast on July 17, 1995, the late Henry, from Carrickfinn, took six hours, 11 minutes and 29 seconds beating the previous record of 6 hours 45 minutes set by Belfast man Jack McClelland in 1968 (despite the fact that report refers to 1964). Jack was also at Magheraroarty to congratulate Henry on his success. The reporter is Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill.
Henry, who lived in Letterkenny, passed away last year, aged 58. He had, in 2022, become the first man to finswim around Ireland, a journey of 1,569 kilometres or 847 nautical miles. Henry raised more than €50,000 for various charities.
