One of Inishowen’s most well-known boutique hotels and music venues has changed hands for around €1 million, it has been revealed.

Commercial property joint agents, BDM Property and TDL Horizons, have confirmed the seven-figure sale of McGrory’s Hotel in Culdaff.

The property, which has played host to some of the world’s biggest names in music over the years, has been acquired by Carndonagh-born businessman Paddy Doherty and the recently formed Doherty Hospitality Group, which last year acquired the Eagle House in Glasthule, Co Dublin.

McGrory’s Hotel was brought to the market following its closure in February 2025, on behalf of the third and fourth generation of the McGrory family connection, by joint agents BDM Property and Donegal-based TDL Horizons, with a guide price of more than €1 million.

The Culdaff business, which has been a fixture for more than a century, comprises 17 beautifully appointed guest bedrooms, bar, restaurant and the famous ‘Backroom’, which is renowned as a live music venue.

In early 2024, the hotel underwent an extensive refurbishment programme, including room upgrades and the installation of new catering kitchen and bar equipment.
McGrory’s Hotel has been a family-owned establishment for over four generations and last year celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Best-known for its fine food, friendly service and traditional music, the hotel has been a cornerstone of the local community since 1924.

John Ryan, of BDM Property, described the sale of McGrory’s Hotel as a “significant vote of confidence in the domestic tourism market” – and he said the speed of its sale highlights the level of demand for key hospitality businesses with a proven track record along the Wild Atlantic Way.

Joint agent Niamh Walsh, of TDL Horizons, added that from a local Donegal perspective, the sale of the historic and unique hotel is a “real boost for the community”, especially as the hotel will take on its next chapter in the hands of a local Inishowen person, Paddy Doherty.

“This successful transaction also highlights the surrounding beautiful tourist area, which lends itself to creating many different experiences from the stunning landscapes and sights to world-class food offerings,” she said.

McGrory’s sits in the centre of Culdaff village, a short walk away from nearby Caratra Strand to the north-west, one of Ireland’s most stunning Blue Flag beaches.
