Commenting on the figures, Donegal Minister of State, Charlie McConalogue said: “The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant Scheme is a creative initiative and it’s great to see the demand for it continuing in Donegal. The more ways we can unlock a new supply of houses in Donegal the better and this scheme is an excellent way of helping to increase our stock.”

“It’s also worth noting that Donegal County Council received the largest number of applications for the scheme. As of the end of June 2025, Donegal received 1,247 applications, of which 922 were approved and 36 were rejected. To date, €12,363,601 has been issued to Donegal applicants on completion of works. Nationally, €112 million has been paid out to bring more than 2,000 homes back into use,” the Minister of State for Sport and Postal Policy added.

The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant provides funding to refurbish vacant and derelict homes. Grants up to €50,000 are available to renovate a vacant property, while grants up to €70,000 are available if the property is derelict.

“The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant Scheme was introduced three years ago and is a game-changer for those seeking to restore vacant properties. I would encourage those considering refurbishing a vacant property to apply for the scheme as it will greatly reduce the financial burden,” the Minister of State commented.

The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant offers up to €50,000, or up to €70,000 for derelict properties, to help renovate vacant homes for private use or rental and is funded by the Department of Housing through the Croí Cónaithe scheme.
