The decent size crowd who converged on Leckview Park were loving it on a beautiful night with some cracking football played in a keenly-contested encounter.
Tim Callaghan struck the bar early as Rovers started quick but it was the visitors who went ahead when Sean Patton's screaming effort found the roof of the net on 10 minutes.
The home side responded well and were level just five minutes later when a thumping left footed free kick from Gareth Temple gave Fintan Doherty in the City goal no chance.
Derry retook the lead on 24 minutes when Tiernan McKinney’s free kick beat Mark Anthony McGinley low to his right.
The action kept going at a fast pace with both sides creating numerous chances but it wasn't until the hour mark when the next goal arrived and it was a cracking effort from Davy O'Brien which restored parity at 2-2.
That set up a cracking finish and after both sides came close to winning it through Callaghan, Conor Tourish and Jack Doherty, it was Letterkenny who found the winner in the last minute when Dean McCarry blasted home.
Next up for Rovers is a big derby game with Bonagee United on Friday night
