There was delighted in Ballybofey on Saturday as Ciara Glackin proved the hero in a historic win for Athlone Town.

Goalkeeper Glackin saved two penalties in the shoot-out as Athlone overcame Shelbourne to win the Presidents Cup.

After a 2-2 thriller, Athlone won 4-2 on penalties.

It was the first staging of this competition for SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division teams and victory meant a first ever piece of silverware for the Athlone women’s team.

Glackin, who lives in Tullamore, is a daughter of Ballybofey native Patrick.

A student at Maynooth University, she has been capped twice by the Republic of Ireland at under-19 level.

At half-time in normal time, Glackin was sent on by manager Tommy Hewitt to replace Nyla Peterkin.

First-half goals by Noelle Murray and Alex Kavanagh had Shelbourne in the driving seat.

However, Muireann Devaney and Roisin Molloy brought Athlone back into it.

In a nervy shoot-out, Glackin saved from Ruvimbo Mucherera and Christie Gray to win it.
