Carl McHugh and ATK Mohun Bagan are the new ISL champions.
There was Indian Super League joy for Carl McHugh this afternoon as his ATK Mohan Bagan side edged out Bengalura 4-3 on penalties.
In a gripping 90 minutes there was nothing to separate the teams as matters ended deadlocked at 2-2. ATK had gone in front on 14 minutes thanks to the first of two Dimitri Petratos penalties.
Five minutes into added time at the end of the first half and Bengaluru equalised through Sunil Chhertri, who also got his side off the mark thanks to a spot kick. McHugh was then yellow carded on 68 minutes before ATK fell behind as Roy Krishna fired Bengaluru 2-1 ahead.
Five minutes out from time and ATK were handed a lifeline when they were awarded their second penalty of the game. Up stepped Chhertri once again to square matters up and send the tie to extra-time.
Nothing changed following a cagy first period there and while both sides had chances in the second half of that, this one was eventually settled by a penalty kicks. ATK also came through a shootout in the semi-final when they overcame Hyderabad.
ATK and Bengalura were both successful with their opening kicks through Alan Costa and Petratos. Krishna and Liston Colaco also found the mark before ATK grabbed the initiative when Bruno Ramires missed Bengaluru’s third effort.
ATK then went 3-2 ahead thanks to Kiyan Nassiri before Chhetri levelled proceedings up from Bengaluru’s fourth kick. But with Pablo Perez off cue again for Bengaluru, it was ATK that took the title.
