History was made today in Cork as Lee McColgan's second half strike sent Cockhill Celtic to their first FAI Intermediate Cup Final.

The match opened at a frantic pace with half chances for both teams. Ringmahon captain Anthony McAlavey fired over before James Bradley's hooked effort also flew over.

A Cockhill short corner routine resulted in a Jason Breslin header going narrowly over before McAlavey's scuffed shot forced Harry Doherty into a scrambling save.

On 19 minutes, Doherty produced a wonderful tip over from a goalbound Adam Delurey free kick. Cockhill responded and, when a defender misjudged a through ball, Garbhan Friel's fine strike was brilliantly diverted wide by ex-Derry City keeper Eric Grimes.

The second half started with Cockhill on the front foot and they got a vital lead goal on 55 minutes. After a Cockhill free kick was cleared they recycled possession and found Keegan Hegarty on the right.

His run and cross was headed to the edge of the box where Lee McColgan kept his amazing record in this competition intact by controlling and firing a half volley to the top corner.

Ringmahon went very direct in their search for an equaliser but found the Cockhill defence in resolute mood and, when called upon, Harry's handling and decision making was excellent.

The latter stages were played out in relative comfort with Cockhill occupying the Ringmahon half for the majority of added time. The referee's final whistle was the cue for unbridled celebrations from Cockhill players, coaching staff, members and supporters.

The team now look forward to an FAI Intermediate Cup Final against Rockmount on April 23.
