Action from Rovers' 3-1 away win in Donegal Town on Sunday.
Letterkenny Rovers manager Stephen McConnell feels that Sunday’s 3-1 victory away at Donegal Town was an important three points for his side in an encounter, which they eyed up as a “big one”.
The visitors earned the win courtesy of goals from Zach Gorman (2) and Gareth Doherty at the Hospital Field. And McConnell was delighted with Rovers afternoon’s work.
“It was a good win but it was hard work,” he said. “It is a very hard place to come to. I found it the same last year when we lost 2-1 here and we were well beaten that day.
“I remember also in the home game we robbed a draw in injury time and we didn’t deserve it. They are a very difficult team to face and so going up the road with three points is hard to beat.”
The first 30 minutes of the contest was finely poised with chances being created at both ends however, McConnell feels that his side got their goals just at the right time with two coming in the final fifteen minutes of the opening half and, the third, occurring just three minutes into the second stanza.
“They threatened any time they went forward but I also felt that we did too and I knew we had goals in us. The boys battled hard in the first-half”.
The Rovers boss mentioned after last week's victory against Bonagee United that their aim this season is to win the League and gain promotion to the Premier Division.
With Donegal Town starting the season in a familiar fashion to his side, McConnell agreed when asked was this an early statement of intent from his side?
“Yeah it was, we said that this was a big one coming into it. There are going to be a lot of away games this season which are going to be difficult places to go and this is right up there.
“If you get out of here with a point or three then that’s great. As I said, last season we came down and left here with nothing. Thankfully, this time out, we’re going back down the road with something”.
