Scoil Mhuire, Buncrana 3-1 Presentation College, Athenry
Athenry secured a significant victory in their provincial final against Coláiste na Coiribe, Cnoc na Cathrach. Notably, their captain, Sky Corcoran, was absent due to a foot injury sustained in the previous game.
Under the guidance of James O’Donnell, the team showcased commendable performances from Kerri O’Driscoll, Victoria Lundstrom, and Niamh Kilgannon. Meanwhile, Buncrana, led by the formidable Loughrey duo, Ferguson, Bradley, and McGilloway, proved to be strong opponents.
The first half witnessed an exciting display of skill, with four exceptional goals scored by both teams. Buncrana secured their opening goal with Jodie Loughrey's knee connecting with Sienna Bradley’s corner, finding the net amid a crowded box. Aoife Doherty doubled their lead shortly after.
Leah Moran of Athenry forced a remarkable save from Hollie Ferguson, maintaining Buncrana's two-goal advantage. A rash tackle by Ferguson on Victoria Lundstrom earned her a yellow card, adding intensity to the match.
Kerri O’Driscoll's crucial goal just before halftime brought Athenry within one. However, Scoil Mhuire extended their lead with Keri Loughrey converting inside the box in injury time.
Despite Athenry's efforts to increase their goal tally, including a close attempt by Leah Moran, the first half concluded with Scoil Mhuire leading 3-1.
The second half was equally captivating, featuring Sienna Bradley's strike hitting the crossbar and impactful performances from substitutes Amira Bouhlel McNamara and Heidi Gill.
In a pulsating finish, Jodie Loughrey's last-ditch tackle prevented Amira Bouhlel McNamara from scoring, securing Scoil Mhuire’s advancement. Paddy Carr’s team demonstrated a fantastic collective effort against strong opposition.
Scoil Mhuire now awaits the winner of the other semi-final between Athlone Community College and Presentation Secondary School, Thurles. The National Cup Final is scheduled for Wednesday, February 21, with the venue yet to be confirmed.
