Carl McHugh in action in India
Carl McHugh’s side FC Goa go top of the Indian Super League after they held out in a second half performance of their away match to Hyderabad FC as they secured a well-deserved 2-0 victory.
Carlos Martinez, the Spanish striker, fell just short of reaching the 10-goal mark for the season with a brace in last night’s clash at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium in Gachibowli, Hyderabad.
The initial half witnessed FC Goa taking the lead early on, as Martinez scored in the seventh minute from a corner-kick delivered by Brandon Fernandes. The 37-year-old striker continued his impressive performance by doubling the lead in the 30th minute, capitalising on a precise pass from Jay Gupta.
Despite relentless pressure from FC Goa, with close attempts from Noah Sadaoui and Brandon hitting the side netting and crossbar, respectively, Hyderabad FC's goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh made crucial saves to keep the scoreline from expanding.
In the second half, FC Goa maintained possession and created opportunities, but Hyderabad FC demonstrated resilience, preventing further goals.
With Martinez's two goals securing the victory, FC Goa reclaimed the top spot on the points table, currently holding 27 points from 11 matches. Their unbeaten streak, consisting of eight wins and three draws, remains intact.
Looking ahead, FC Goa will face Odisha FC in Bhubaneswar, setting the stage for a rematch of the recent Kalinga Super Cup clash, where Marquez and his team aim to rectify their narrow defeat against the Juggernauts.
