Max Johnston is loving life right now as he looks to cement his place in Darren Murphy’s first team plans at Finn Park.

The Glenmaquin native (19) netted his first senior goal for Finn Harps last weekend in the side’s 3-2 home win over Longford Town.

The former Lagan Harps and Letterkenny Rovers underage star grabbed the opener for Darren Murphy’s outfit, just three minutes in while Tony McNamee and Success Edogun were also on target in that win.

Harps have moved back up to fourth in the standings and now go away to second-placed UCD this Friday night.

“I’m really enjoying it,” Johnston told DonegalLive. “It’s great experience playing in the league and there is a real togetherness in the squad. Darren is very good at making sure the mood is good.

“He’s very approachable and I’m learning a lot from him. Kevin McHugh is there as well. I know him well from coming up. As a former striker, his finishing drills and bits of instruction are really beneficial for the likes of myself.

“We’re enjoying our football. It was great to get the win last weekend and get on the scoresheet.

“It was very early on in the game so it was a great start. We’d to battle in the end up but we got the three points. But Friday night, and UCD, that’s a step up.

“They are going really well. We drew with them at home last month so we know how good they are. But we want to build momentum as there is nothing like winning games on a consistent basis”.

Johnston is an apprentice electrician, working alongside his dad. And he admits there is nice leeway there when it comes to training and games.

“To be fair to dad he’s very good in that way. I’ve just started my apprenticeship but he’s been a big supporter of the football and myself so he gives me that little bit of room for manoeuvre.

“If there is an away game that maybe needs time off on a Friday he’s brilliant like that. I really appreciate it. It just allows me to concentrate on the football when it’s time to turn attention to that”.
