Tommy Canning has returned to Finn Harps as a coach.

The Strabane man is among the coaching staff in the home dugout for tonight's First Division game against Kerry FC at Finn Park.

Canning stepped down after a short spell as manager if NIFL Championship side Ballinamallard last month.

He managed the Mallards from November and he quit the role in June after having finished ninth in the League.

Canning had a couple of previous spells at Finn Harps, including a brief time at the end of the 2023 season when he aided Darren Murphy for the latter part of the campaign. Harps boss Murphy has now brought Canning back into his set-up again.

“I had a conversation with the Board and with my own coaching staff and Tommy is too good of a football man not to have involved in the football club," Murphy said.

“The things I want in the club are a good structure around the staff - and Tommy adds to that – and the development of young players. Tommy brings a wealth of knowledge.

"He understands the league and he understands the football club.”

A former manager of the Sion Swifts senior ladies, Canning had a stint as first team coach at Harps under Ollie Horgan.

In 2019, he returned to Harps as Under-19 team manager, a post he left in 2021 to take up the job of managing NIFL Championship outfit Dergview.
