Galway United are delighted to announce the signing of Buncrana native Emma Doherty, with the 20-year-old striker joining United after an impressive spell with Sligo Rovers.

Doherty has become one of the most notable strikers in the country since her debut in 2022, averaging out roughly a goal every second game for the 'Bit O’ Red.

The Donegal player started playing football with local teams Illies Celtic and Buncrana Hearts and then played for the Donegal League’s women’s team for two years before she signed for Sligo Rovers in 2022, making her debut in the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division that same year.

Doherty had an instant impact at Rovers, scoring 11 goals in 26 games in 2022 and winning the SSE/LOI Player of the Month for June/July for her amazing form.

Her efforts also saw her earn a play in the league’s Team of the Year. Doherty has since kept that form up and has played 50+ games for Sligo Rovers since, scoring just under 30 goals in that time.

“I’ve heard loads of good things, the style of play will really suit me, so I’m really excited to get going," Doherty told the Galway United club website.
