Mark Coyle scored after just 27 seconds to give Shelbourne the edge in their UEFA Conference League qualifier against St Joseph's from Gibraltar.
Coyle netted inside a minute on Thursday night at Tolka Park.
The Burt man's goal helped give Shelbourne a 2-1 advantage after the first leg.
Shels hadn't played in Europe since a 2006 game against Odense in the Intertoto Cup.
Coyle, the Shelbourne captain, is in his third season at the Reds. Coyle opened the scoring with the game's first attack, firing to the bottom corner after Will Jarvis did the spadework.
Francisco Paul Curado levelled in the 40th minute when a corner kick bounced off him and past Conor Kearns, the Shelbourne goalkeeper.
Shels, managed by former Republic of Ireland player Damien Duff, hit the front again in the 58th minute.
Former Finn Harps player Sean Boyd nodded into the path of John Martin, who was bundled over and the home side awarded a penalty. Jarvis stepped up to fire past Alejandro Navas Ruiz and give Shels a slender lead heading to the second leg.
