On Monday, September 2 the Sion Swifts women's team lifted the trophy after winning the Northern Ireland Women’s Football Association Championship. There were six Donegal players on the squad.

Bronagh Gallaher, Caoimhe Heron, Zoe Green, Cache Crumlish, Keisha Friel, Hannah Gibson Kerry McCready and Ella McCarron were all part of the team.

The team won 15 out of 18 league games this season finishing on 46 points.  The Tyrone team only dropped points in three games this season, drawing one and losing two.

In the final home game of the season the team won 3-1 at home to Bangor ladies. However, the team already had the trophy secured after winning at Foyle Belles the week before.

Winning this trophy was a big success for the Swifts. Last season the team dropped out of the NIFL Premiership and lost several key players. This success shows how far the team has come, especially integrating more youth players into the senior squad.

“The 2024 NIWFA Championship has been an outstanding season for my squad” commented manager Christopher Barnaby.

“Our squad average age is 18 with the youngest 16 and oldest 26. Players come from Strabane, Derry, Fermanagh and Donegal. With Bronagh Gallagher, Caoimhe Heron, Zoe Green, Cache Crumlish, Keisha Friel, Ella McCarron, Hannah Gibson and Kerry McCready coming from Donegal.”

The season started with a major rebuild, however every girl seemed to take this in stride. Before the season started, the team's aim was to transfer what the team learned in training into matches.

However, after a few good results they began to change their ambitions and continue to fight at the top.

The group is committed and not fazed by the short travel into Strabane for football.

“They are a great asset to not just the senior panel but the club. The way they apply themselves in training and just want to fight for the team during games. They are a pleasure to work with and I look forward in seeing how they progress further in the 2025 season along with everyone else

“The girls have worked hard and applied themselves since my arrival in February. I am super proud of the girls they deserve this season and with a cup final to look forward to we hope we can be twice as successful and win the double” continued Christopher.
