FAI to deal with alleged assault of referee in Donegal League game

The Football Association of Ireland will deal with the case of a Donegal Junior League game abandoned on Sunday following an alleged physical assault of a referee.

The report of Gerard Devine, who abandoned the Brian McCormick Cup game between Swilly Rovers and Rathmullan Celtic at Swilly Park in Ramelton, will be considered by FAI disciplinary chiefs.

Swilly were leading the game 1-0 at the time, early in the second half, when an alleged incident took place between a Rathmullan Celtic player and the referee.

The referee's report will be forwarded to the FAI by the Donegal Junior League.

Where there is any incident involving an alleged assault of a match official, the case is referred directly to the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), whose Disciplinary Control Unit (DCU) investigate.

Devine's match report was sent to the Donegal Junior League earlier this week.

The Donegal Junior League will rule on the outcome of the game and determine whether Swilly Rovers are given the passage into the Area Shield final against Letterkenny Rovers. The other three Area Shield finals will be played this Sunday.

The Donegal Junior League secretary, Nigel Ferry, says 'due process' will be allowed and the matter will be dealt with 'in due course by the relevant bodies'.
