Jack Keaney in action for Drogheda United

Despite Donegal Town's Jack Keaney being sent off, Drogheda United comfortably secured their place in the FAI Cup semi-finals for the first time in 11 years, with a commanding 4-1 win over Athlone Town.

Keaney was shown a red card for a clumsy foul in the box, but by then, Drogheda were already in control.

Douglas James-Taylor stole the show with a brace, bringing his tally to 11 goals this season. His first came after some poor Athlone defending, while his second early in the second half put the result beyond doubt.

Ryan Brennan, marking his 200th appearance for his hometown club, added to the dominance with a superb free-kick, reminding fans of his contribution in Drogheda's last Cup run in 2013.

Athlone did pull one back late on, with former Drogheda player Kyle Robinson converting a penalty after Keaney’s dismissal, but it was merely a consolation. Adam Foley rounded off the performance with a brilliant solo effort for Drogheda’s fourth, leaving them one match away from a long-awaited return to Lansdowne Road.
