Sligo Rovers' Gareth McElroy has impressed at the Showgrounds this season

Gareth McElroy picked up a knock in Sligo Rovers’ 2-2 draw with Galway United on Friday that has Bit O’Red boss John Russell concerned.

19-year-old Burnfoot native McElroy sat out the initial part of the 2024 season with a torn meniscus and Russell admits he’s now hoping a scan on the same knee doesn’t reveal a recurrence of a similar injury.

“I thought his performance was incredible tonight,” Russell said after the weekend’s draw, a result that ends Rovers’ hopes of securing European football at the Showgrounds for 2025.
