Seami Friel gets to this ball first for the Donegal League
Eamonn Sheridan admits that Sunday’s Oscar Traynor League win over Inishowen came down to potluck in a penalty shootout.
Still, the Donegal League boss said the derby tie was all about winning and advancing to the competition’s next round.
Matters were deadlocked at two apiece after the first leg in Maginn Park and that’s exactly how it finished again, this time out in Ballyare.
Extra-time still couldn’t split the teams and so it took spot kicks to eventually decide this tie. In the end, Shane O’Gara’s sudden death save from Thomas McMonagle that settled it.
“Once it goes to penalties it’s a real lottery,” admitted Sheridan. “Funny, Mickey McGlynn reckoned Shane would save one or two for us and he was right.
“But it’s tough on Inishowen having to go out like that. It was just about getting over the line today, getting past this one. And we’re delighted”.
He added: “At 2-1 up, especially after going behind, we were in a good place. But we gave away a soft equaliser from the corner. That was really disappointing.
“We made some changes in extra-time, had a few chances at the back post but couldn’t get that winner. But in the end we just got that rub of the green on the spot kicks”.
