Finn Harps player Gavin McAteer has achieved his first cap for the Republic of Ireland U-17s, making an appearance off the bench in their 3-0 defeat to Finland on Wednesday.

The Milford-born midfielder was included in Colin O’Brien’s 22-man squad on Monday, ahead of two friendly fixtures in Spain.

Ireland faced Finland in Oliva Nova, near Valencia, with McAteer entering the pitch in the 84th minute as his side suffered a 3-0 loss.

These matches serve as preparation for next month’s U-17 European Championship qualifiers in Poland, where Ireland will compete against Iceland, Belgium, and the host nation. The group winner will secure automatic qualification for the finals in Albania this May.

The teenager has enjoyed a breakout year in 2024, featuring 15 times for the Finn Harps senior team. He made his debut at just 15 years old, becoming the second-youngest player in the club’s history.

McAteer has since had a trial with Nottingham Forest alongside his Finn Harps teammate Oisín Cooney.
