Lurgybrack’s girls and Gaelscoil Adhamhnáin boys enjoy Letterkenny Cup successes

St Patrick’s of Lurgybrack

There was schools football joy for both St Patrick’s of Lurgybrack and Gaelscoil Adhamhnáin this week as they both lifted Letterkenny Cup titles.

First up, Lurgybrack edged St. Mary’s NS, Stranorlar 1-0 in the day’s curtain-raiser. Lurgybrack took an early lead when Croía Lyne scored a terrific goal in the first minute.

While this was to be the only score of the game, both teams came close to adding to the early score, but the attackers found both netminders on top form.

St. Mary’s girls kept the pressure on the Lurgybrack girls right up to the final whistle with great skill and determination.

Match referee Vincent McLaughlin presented St. Patrick’s NS Captain Grace Parke with the Letterkenny Cup at the end of the enthralling encounter.

St. Mary’s captain, Alison Mbuli, was presented with the Player of the Match award after a fantastic performance from her.

St. Patrick’s girls were delighted to bring the shield back to Lurgybrack for another year as Letterkenny Cup champions.

Boys decider

In the Boys decider, the winners of the last two Letterkenny Cups met in this year’s final at the Community Centre with Glenswilly NS going down 4-1 to Gaelscoil Adhamhnáin.

Darragh Mac Giolla Choill opened the scoring with a sweetly struck freekick from the left to put the Gaelscoil boys 1-0 up after 14 minutes.

Glenswilly NS came close to equalising on 20 minutes when they tested the Gaelscoil netminder, Daniel Mac Fhloinn.

A great solo effort from Ciarán Ó Cuinneagáin made it 2-0 just before the teams departed the pitch for half-time.

Wet and windy conditions made play difficult for both sides, but it was the Gaelscoil boys that started the second half better with a fine finish from player of the match, Ciarán Ó Cuinneagáin.

Glenswilly replied quickly to the Gaelscoil’s third goal when Jack Dowd brought the deficit back to two goals midway through the second half with an excellent finish from outside the box.
