Finn Harps Women’s U-19s were narrowly defeated by Sligo Rovers on a 3-2 scoreline in their opening game of the 2025 season, despite dominating possession for large periods and creating numerous chances on Thursday evening.

Harps will be disappointed not to have come away with more from the match, especially after a resilient performance that saw them control much of the play.

The visitors opened the scoring early in the first half, but Harps responded with great desire and fantastic football, leveling the score just before halftime. Codie Walsh played a perfect ball through for Orlaith Doherty, who showed great composure to slide it past the Sligo goalkeeper into the bottom corner.

In the second half, Harps continued their attacking play, creating several excellent opportunities to score but failing to convert. Sligo, to their credit, remained clinical and took advantage of their chances, eventually going 3-1 up.

Despite the scoreline, Harps refused to give up, continuing to threaten the Sligo defense. With two minutes remaining, Olivia Maxwell scored a stunning free-kick, giving the Sligo keeper no chance and setting up a tense finish.

Unfortunately for Harps, they couldn’t force a third goal, and Sligo held on to claim the close-fought points.

Erika Gallagher and Codie Walsh stood out with exceptional performances, earning joint recognition as Players of the Match for their efforts.
