Max Johnston will be sidelined for a considerable period of time with Finn Harps confirming that the ankle injury picked up in their win over Athlone last Friday night is a significant one.

Harps made it back-to-back victories after a 1-0 win at the Athlone Town Stadium at the weekend.

In what was an eventful week off the field at the club, with the departure of manager Darren Murphy last Tuesday, it was an 88th-minute strike from substitute Gavin Gilmore that made the difference and earned the Twin Town men an important three points on the road.

However, deep into injury time Johnston - an Academy graduate at the club - sustained the injury as he blocked a Kailin Barlow effort.

A statement from the club read: “The club can confirm that Max Johnston suffered a significant ankle injury after a crucial block in the final stages of Friday’s win in Athlone.

“Max was taken to Tullamore Hospital where he received treatment before undergoing surgery on Saturday. He was discharged from hospital on Sunday afternoon and has returned home to rest and recover.

“Everyone at Finn Park is fully behind Max as he begins his road to recovery and we have no doubt he will be back as strong as ever.”
