A Ballybofey United player has been suspended for two years following an incident involving a match referee.
The Finn Travel Saturday Division 3 clash between Ballybofey United and Bonagee United in March was abandoned by match official Leo Devenney as a result of James Sweeney’s actions for the hosts.
The game had been tied at 1-1, with around 20 minutes to go, when proceedings were prematurely brought to a halt.
Where there is an incident involving a match official, the case is referred directly to the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), whose Disciplinary Control Unit (DCU) then investigates the details in the referee’s match report.
Following the conclusion of that, the Donegal Junior League has confirmed to DonegalLive that the DCU has now handed down a two-year ban to Sweeney.
The offence cited in their findings was: “Offence(s) Relating to FAI Regulation: Section 7.2, Regulation 2(1)(d) Misconduct by Players and Officials Against Match Officials of the FAI Handbook January 2024 version”.
