Oisin Cooney made his debut for the Burnley Under-21s in a defeat to Southampton in the Premier League 2 on Friday.

The Clonmany native moved to the Clarets earlier this month from Finn Harps and made his debut in the long trip south as Burnley lost 2-1 away to Southampton.

An early goal from Moses Sesay had the hosts ahead before Cooney’s Republic of Ireland Under-19 teammate Romeo Akachukwu doubled their lead.

Substitute Brandon Pouani got one back late on for Burnley, but it wasn’t enough as Southampton remain unbeaten in the PL2 after four games, while Burnley have just one result in an away win over Liverpool.

Cooney is a graduate of the Finn Harps Academy, first representing the club’s MU15 side in 2022 after signing from Clonmany Shamrocks. His impressive displays saw him promoted to the MU19 squad the following season while also training with the first team.

He made his senior debut on the final day of the 2023 campaign and since logged 18 appearances before his move to the North West of England.

The deal, which does not involve an upfront transfer fee, includes a series of performance-related clauses linked to first-team appearances, along with a future sell-on percentage.
