Donegal Junior League’s matchwinner Eddie O’Reilly is hoping that the side can get to the Oscar Traynor Cup final after a couple of near misses in recent years.

Eamonn Sheridan’s side got past Inishowen for the third year in a row since the competition's return, as they won 4-2 on aggregate to go into the national stage.

And with the new structure, meaning they go straight into a semi-final, the team are ninety minutes from a final.

“The last few years we have done ourselves a disservice, and we had a good chance to get into a final in one of the years,” O’Reilly said after the 1-0 win in Maginn Park.

“We’re well prepped this year, and it’s nice that we miss out on that extra game and go straight into the semi-final, and hopefully we can give it a good rattle.

“We got to the semi-final two years ago, and then last year we got a home quarter-final up in Swilly Park. But we conceded a few bad goals, and we were disappointed to come away without another game.

“But we have a great chance this year, and we’ll try to give it our best shot. We want to go further this year.”

Donegal went into the game after a 3-2 win in Ballyare two weeks previous, and a draw would have been enough.

But it was more comfortable when the Fanad United clubman scored the only goal of the game in the 67th minute as he tapped in from Paddy Carr’s header that came off the bar.

“It’s nice to get the win, we were happy enough with the first half as we tried to slow the game a bit and try and not to concede. We got the job done in that half, but we knew it would be another battle, so we’re just happy to get over the line.

“Paddy has scored a few headers for Fanad and I just knew that even when he was 15 yards out, he’d make a good effort, and when I seen it heading between the ‘keeper and crossbar, I knew I’d have to try and get in and get a touch on it. Luckily, it bounced for m,e and it’s nice to get on the scoresheet.”
