A well-taken strike from Johnny Robb proved decisive as Kildrum Tigers edged out Carn FC 1–0 in a tense and hard-fought Ulster Junior Cup final at Maginn Park on Sunday afternoon.

Robb's composed finish midway through the first half was enough to separate the sides in a contest that remained in the balance right to the final whistle, with Carn throwing everything at Kildrum in search of an equaliser that never came.

Carn created the first opening when Shay McDaid released Kyran Cantwell on the left, but his effort was comfortably gathered by Michael Lynch.

Kildrum responded through William Lynch, who flicked on for Luke Toland, but his effort was deflected behind by Callum Kelly.

The breakthrough arrived on 26 minutes. A looping cross from Duncan Patterson dropped into the path of Robb, who made no mistake from 10 yards, guiding a left-footed finish into the bottom corner.

Carn responded well and finished the first half on the front foot, pressing Kildrum back, but without creating a clear-cut chance before the break.

After the restart, Liam McWeeney fired over from distance as Carn continued to push forward. McDaid then combined well with substitute Cian Burke inside the area, but from a tight angle he shot straight at Lynch.

Carn were forced into a defensive reshuffle following an injury to Will Quinn, with Michael McDermott moving to right-back and Mark McLaughlin dropping into the centre.

Kildrum’s only real second-half opportunity came on 81 minutes when McKinley tried his luck again, but McDaid gathered comfortably.

In the closing stages Carn laid siege to the Kildrum defence. Kelly saw a free-kick saved, while Kyran Cantwell burst into the area only to be denied by a crucial Keelan Diver challenge.

The game was halted briefly on the stroke of full-time after McLaughlin picked up an ankle injury, with best wishes extended for his recovery.

Five minutes of stoppage time saw Carn continue to launch balls into the box, but Matthew Crossan and Diver stood firm as Kildrum held out to claim the trophy.

Despite the defeat, Carn’s young side will take huge encouragement from their performance and look a team set to progress in the seasons ahead.
