Mountcharles Regatta this weekend

Mountcharles Rowing Club hold their Regatta this weekend as part of the Donegal Coastal Rowing Association series of regattas.

The Regatta is being hosted by the local Mountcharles Rowing Club and as the Skiff Racing season draws to close organisers are reporting a very large entry.

Among the clubs entered are Moville, Triagheanna, Kincasslagh, Burtonport, Loughros, Killybegs, Inver, Maigheanna and Donegal Town.

“With all those clubs taking part it promises to be the largest regatta of the season and with it being the last regatta of the season it makes it extra special and one not to be missed,” said Caroline Gillespie of Mountcharles Rowing Club.

Sunday’s regatta will be the first staging of the event in quite a while. The last Mountcharles Regatta was held all of 36 years ago, on Sunday July 24th back in the summer of 1977. It was run by local general practitioner Dr. Nolan.

The Regatta gets underway off Mountcharles Pier at 1 pm with races at U-16 boys, U-18, mixed, senior men and senior women.

CLARIFICATION

In our issue of last Thursday, it was stated that the Donegal Town Regatta was the last of the season.

This information was incorrect and we are happy to clarify. The regatta this weekend in Mountcharles was always planned to be the final event of the year. The article last week also omitted to mention that Moville and CCF (Cloughaneely) are also affiliated members of the Donegal Coastal Rowing Association.

“We have no block on any team, affiliated or not, taking part in our regattas,” said chairman Micheal Curran.

“We are encourging everyone to support the event in Mountcharles this week as it is a big event for this club.

“We have had an excellent rowing season this year with all our regattas receiving magnificent support,” said Mr. Curran.

“We hope to build on this success next year and make the sport even more enjoyable and competitive,” said the chairman.
