Coleman scores as Everton cruise through

Seamus Coleman scored his first Everton goal in two years in his side’s 5-1 win FA Cup third round win against Cheltenham Town on Monday night.

The Killybegs native scored Everton’s fourth goal in their comfortable win at Whaddon Road; his first goal since he scored exactly two years to the day beforehand when Everton won at Scunthorpe, also by five goals to one in the FA Cup third round.

Nikica Jelavic poked in an opener for David Moyes’ team against Cheltenham after Marouane Fellaini’s shot hit a post before Leighton Baines converted a penalty.

Leon Osman smashed in a third just after the break but Cheltenham quickly pulled one back as Russell Penn fired in at the near post. Coleman’s lofted finish made it 4-1 when he broke forward from his right-back berth and burst into the box and dinked the ball over Scott Brown after exchanging passes with Victor Anichebe. Fellaini stabbed in a fifth from close range.

Everton will play either Sunderland or Bolton in the next round.

Twenty-four-year-old Coleman had missed Everton’s previous four outings with a hamstring strain. Everton, who currently sit in fifth place in the Premier League, welcome Swansea City to Goodison Park on Saturday.
