Clean sheet for Fintan Doherty as Ireland U17s beat Belgium

Fintan Doherty kept a clean sheet as the Republic of Ireland Under-17s defeated Belgium in Spain.

The Letterkenny teenager was between the sticks as Colin O’Brien’s team scored a 1-0 win in Marbella.

Rocco Vata scored a late goal to give Ireland the win after the teams shared a 2-2 draw on Thursday.

The games were organised in preparation for the Elite Round of the UEFA Under-17 European Championship qualifiers.

Ireland face a tough round of qualifiers where they'll meet Elite Round hosts Portugal (March 23), followed by Finland (March 26) and Bulgaria (March 29).

Derry City goalkeeper Doherty, a former Bonagee United schoolboy has worked his way into the Irish squad in the last year.

The St Eunan’s College student was in the Derry City senior panel in recent weeks for pre-season friendlies.
