Fintan Doherty played the full game on Saturday as the Republic of Ireland Under-17s lost narrowly to Finland in their Elite Round qualifier at the Parque Desportivo Sant'Ana, Penalva Castelo in Portugal.

The Derry City goalkeeper, who hails from Letterkenny, started for the Boys in Green.

Cork City forward Franco Umeh had twice given Ireland the lead in the crucial Group 8 clash but ultimately Finland battled back and finishes from Julio Freitas Von Hellens and substitutes Lauri Laine and Yilson Lika earned their country the three points.

Doherty, a graduate of Bonagee United, has been a regular on the Irish panel lately.

Ireland face Bulgaria at the Municipal Santa Comba Dao on Tuesday afternoon.
