Dog owners or handlers who do not dispose of dog waste in a responsible way can receive an on-the-spot fine of €150
Donegal Council County has launched a crackdown on dog fouling in Killybegs.
Dog owners in the area have been warned that the county council’s dog warden and litter warden are making regular visits to the area after complaints about the increase in dog fouling.
Local councillor Niam Kennedy said visits have been made to the area by the wardens after the council was “notified of the failings of dog owners to clean up after their pets”.
“They will be visiting Killybegs on a regular basis and issuing fines where necessary,” she said.
Dog owners or handlers who do not dispose of dog waste in a responsible way can receive an on-the-spot fine of €150. Failure to pay the fine can lead to prosecution with a maximum fine of €3,000.
Cllr Kennedy said she is receiving ongoing complaints about the issue which is affecting areas such as Main Street, the shorefront and Shore Road.
“I have had a lot of complaints about it. People are coming into the area to walk their dogs and there is a lot more of it than there used to be. It is everywhere - outside shops, cafes and bars. It’s affecting parents with buggies and wheelchair users who can’t use the footpaths. People are leaving it without a care in the world and are leaving others to deal with the consequences.”
