A man has appeared at Dungloe District Court, charged with 84 counts of sexual assault.

The man, who can’t be named for legal reasons, is charged with sexual assault on a male contrary to Section Two of the Criminal Law Rape (Amendment) Act 1990 as amended by Section 37 of the Sex Offenders Act 2001.

The offences are alleged to have happened on dates unknown between January 1 1992, and November 1998 at various locations in County Donegal.  Detective Garda David Leahy told the court that the DPP had directed trial on indictment in the Circuit Court.

There was no Garda objection to bail, on condition that the defendant stay away from the alleged victim or any witnesses. The defendant, who was in court, was remanded on bail to appear at Letterkenny District Court on April 24 for the service of a book of evidence.

Defence Solicitor Ciaran Mac Lochlainn said the defendant had come to court by arrangement. Legal aid was granted. Judge Éiteáin Cunningham ruled that nothing be published that might identify the alleged victim, the defendant or witnesses.
