The funeral of the late Margaret Moohan took place in Bundoran on Tuesday morning
The funeral took place on Tuesday morning of Margaret Moogan (née Murphy), late of Drumacrin, Bundoran at the The Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea Bundoran, before interment at Finner cemetery.
She passed to her eternal reward on February 25, peacefully at home and surrounded by her loving family.
Margaret who was in his 91st year, held the position of Joint President of the local Realt na Mara GAA club in Bundoran at the time of her passing and was an honorary member of that club.
This was reflected in a guard of honour which was accorded by the club.
This was both indicative of her ever faithful dedication and continual support of the club down the decades as well as the involvement of three generations of the extended Moohan family in all aspects of the club, both on the field of play and on the administrative side of the club.
Her Funeral Mass was celebrated by Rev Canon Ramon Munster P.P. who spoke of a dedicated mother, who had reared a fine family and was the epitome of the hard working generation from which she was from.
He said: “It is a very sorrowful and sad time as Margaret has left this family, this area and gone to her eternal rest in heaven. But while the family would be very, very sad in losing their good Mother, grandmother and great grandmother, the very fact that she has passed the age of 90 and was into year 91 is something that is marvellous for her and marvellous for her family as well.”
Not many people got to that age, and while she had been blessed with those years, she had also enjoyed them, contributed so much to the local community and had left a great legacy, he added.
Deceased was born in January of 1932 to Jack and Elizabeth Murphy. She went to school until she was 14, when she came to Bundoran from Kinawley to work in Duffy’s B&B.
In those days school was important but work was also important to all families because the young people “had to bring a few bob home to the family as well, because life was very difficult for all families at that time”.
She also worked in the Marathon Hotel in the West End of the seaside town for two years at aged 16, spent some time in Derry working in a milking parlour.
After returning to Bundoran around the age of 17, she took up employment at the Central Hotel on Main Street for a number of years and that was where she met her husband, the later Gerry Moohan, whom she married in October 1954.
They spent a year working in Scotland before returning to Bundoran at Drumacrin, where the deceased helped her husband Gerry on the farm and where they raised their young family.
They were a very happy family and that was added to when grandchildren and grandchildren later arrived.
Fr Munster spoke of visitations to the house down the years, which was always a hive of activity.
Not only was she a sociable person, she also was the housekeeper for a number of the local clergy including the late Canon Duffy, Fr Conlon, and Fr Munster’s predecessor, Fr Connolly.
Her busy schedule also included attending many football matches, their functions and social events over many years.
Weekly trips down to Mrs Leahy on Church Road to get the hair done and chats with Mary Fitzgerald, Marion’s mother and singer at the Funeral Mass, was just another part of her busy routine.
Fr Munster also recalled of how she had looked after her late husband in his latter days, after he had taken ill.
He said that she never missed the local football matches, initially with her children and through their participation and then later with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He said: “Because she had a great interest in that, she was appointed a President of the GAA club which she still retained to this day. She was very proud that she had been allocated that position, one she would not have been given unless she had done something special for the club and in supporting them in every way possible as well as her family supporting them.”
Margaret was the beloved wife of the late Gerry Moohan and was loving mother to Bosco, Pauline (Keaney), Majella (Gethins) and Geraldine (Walsh).
Deeply regretted by her loving son, daughters, sons-in-law, her adored 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, her brothers Terence (Mary), Hughie, sister Bridget (Sean), sister-in-law Mary (UK) and all her many nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
After mass of the Resurrection at the Church of Our Lady Star of the Sea, Bundoran burial took place afterwards in Finner Cemetery, Bundoran.
