Councillor Niamh Kennedy alongside the Comhairle na nDaltaí
Councillor Niamh Kennedy attended the inaugural Bruckless NS student council elections recently. She spoke with the students about the challenges and highlights of public representation. Five brave pupils put their names forward for election as President and Vice-President. Ms Kennedy commented that she was glad to see that two out of the five candidates were female, a great percentage.
Using their persuasive language and writing techniques Ms Kennedy was greatly impressed by their ideas and presentation skills.
Both staff and pupils alike registered to vote, collected their ballot papers, with the candidate’s pictures on them, and cast their votes in the privacy of actual voting booths. Ms Kennedy was invited to vote also. All candidates were appointed to the Comhairle na nDaltaí.
The council will now act as a voice for all pupils in the school bringing all ideas to meetings and looking for ways to improve their school as well as forging community links and involvement.
Meanwhile, Bruckless NS is holding its annual Christmas Arts and Crafts fair on Friday, December 8 after morning mass at 10:45 am. This popular event will have lots of cards and decorations made by the children for sale. There will also be a selection of used books looking for good homes that can be taken with a donation to the school.
The event will coincide with a coffee and tea morning raising funds for the local charity St Vincent de Paul.
