Dr Charles McManus is the new General Practitioner for Ardara and will take up the position tomorrow, August 23.

Previously based in Dunkineely, he performed the medical duties for the Donegal senior footballers when they won the 2012 All-Ireland SFC, and takes over from the retiring Dr Mireille Sweeney, a single-handed GP, who was a family doctor in Ardara for 29 years.

Dr McManus, from  Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim, holds memberships for both the Irish College of General Practitioners, the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland and also a Fellowship in Sports and Exercise Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians, Ireland.

Mc Manus also qualified with an H Diploma in Dermatology from University College Dublin, a Diploma in Practice Management from the Irish College of General Practitioners and a Diploma in Medical Education from Queens University, Belfast.

“The HSE wishes him well in his new role,” the HSE said. “This is really good news for the area at a time when GP recruitment can be extremely difficult across the country.

“The surgery in Ardara will be closed on Friday August 23 to allow for the transfer from Dr Sweeney to Dr Mc Manus. In the case of an acute medical emergency patients should contact 074 9544147 for medical advice or NoWDOC after 6pm. The HSE would also like to assure patients in Lettermacaward that there will be no changes to the current service arrangements in place for them. “Finally the HSE would like to wish Dr Mireille Sweeney a long and happy retirement.”
