Fianna Fáil has selected Sligo county councillor Edel McSharry as the party’s candidate in Sligo-Leitrim for the next general election.

The Sligo-Leitrim constituency contains parts of south Donegal including Ballyshannon and Bundroran.

Cllr McSharry was unanimously selected at a constituency convention. She is the head of the school of nursing, health sciences and disability studies at ATU St Angela’s and is a niece of former Tánaiste and  Minister for Finance Ray MacSharry.

“I am delighted and honoured to be nominated by my Fianna Fáil party members and selected this evening to run for Fianna Fáil in Sligo-Leitrim constituency for the next general election,” she said.

“I am mindful of the fact I am representing people of south Donegal and I will work tirelessly for everyone in my constituency.

"I currently represent my constituents at local level, and am privileged to get the opportunity to seek to represent them on a national level".

"There are a long list of priorities that I would like to tackle as our region has been classified by EU metrics as a ‘region in transition’ and most recently referred to as a ‘lagging region’. I will be seeking a positive discrimination approach for inward investment into the North West to provide infrastructure and services that the constituency requires for economic development for the benefit of the people as well as their well being and health. My priorities will be guided by the people, I will listen to what is important to them as it is the will of the people that will form the axis around which all my efforts will evolve.

“I feel my lived experience and the determination and proven commitment which I have displayed in my personal life as a mother, my professional career, and community and political activity will be an asset in my efforts to make a difference for our constituency if elected to Dáil Éireann.

“My promise is that I will be a strong voice for this constituency and will be unstoppable in my efforts to bring greater prosperity and quality of life to the people of  this region I will be seeking the number one vote from the people of Sligo-Leitrim in the next general election in order to do this.”
