A motion on the visibility of speed ramps was raised at the January meeting of Letterkenny-Milford municipal district by Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh

Calls have been made to ensure that all speed ramps on Donegal roads are clearly visible to motorists.

A motion on the issue was raised at the January meeting of Letterkenny-Milford municipal district by Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh.

He asked: “that the council make sure that all ramps in the area are properly lit and marked so that they are visible to drivers, as people are getting cars damaged on some of them."

Cllr Kavanagh said he was bringing the motion forward after an incident in Letterkenny, where a couple from County Meath damaged their car going over a speed ramp at Wolfe Tone Place before Christmas.

“Speed ramps are important to slow down cars, but they need to be clearly visible,” said Cllr Kavanagh.

Cllr Gerry McMonagle seconded the motion. He reminded councillors that last year, he brought a similar motion calling for traffic calming measures in the Glencar area.

“There needs to be more public lighting at the speed ramps outside St Eunans College,” said Cllr McMonagle. “You don't see them until you're on top of them. The couple weren’t aware of the ramp at Wolfe Tone Place, they didn't see it until the last minute.”

In response, David McIlwaine from the council’s Roads and Transportation team said he would be happy to follow up with the issue.

“All Speed tables/ ramps are located close to Public Lighting and are marked in accordance with the Traffic Signs Manual or the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges,” he said in a written statement.
