HUGG, Ireland’s national suicide bereavement charity, is raising awareness of the support services available for adults who are impacted by suicide loss.
HUGG will host the first of three events in Donegal, on Saturday 15th July at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Letterkenny from 1-4pm.
For every one person who dies by suicide it’s estimated that 135 people are affected by the death. This equates to more than 60,000 individuals who may be impacted by suicide in Ireland every year.
But there is hope after suicide.
We know from our National Suicide Bereavement Survey* that people who experience grief after a suicide may also experience positive impacts. They are stronger, they care more deeply for others and, in time they reach a turning point where they can let go of some of their grief.
Recently published research by the National Suicide Research Foundation (NSRF)** also shows that participation in HUGG Groups directly help lower traumatic grief and improve overall wellbeing.
HUGG Donegal Volunteer Facilitator, Val says “HUGG has allowed me to express myself freely in a group knowing that someone in the group will know exactly how I feel without having to explain it to them. The HUGG family has helped me to feel less alone on my journey and it has provided an outlet to put some positive energy into.“
If you or someone you know, is bereaved by suicide, you are welcome to join us for coffee, cake, and compassionate conversations around suicide grief. HUGG CEO, Fiona Tuomey, will share what local support services are available and you will hear from Bryan Nolan, a grief and loss specialist. Doors open at 1.pm with speaker at 1.30pm.
Anyone over 18 who has been bereaved by suicide can get support visiting HUGG.ie and completing our ‘Join A Group’ form or by calling 01 513 4048.
