Luke Barrett, far left, and the Donegal U-17s recorded an encouraging win over Cavan.
Donegal U-17s may have had a fine 1-13 to 1-9 victory over a quality Cavan side, but team boss Luke Barrett insists there is still room for improvement.
Barrett’s boys had a bright start and went 0-4 to 0-0 ahead by the 8th minute but were overhauled by Cavan and eventually trailed by 1-7 to 1-6 at the break.
But they saw this encounter out in a wind assisted second half to make it three wins out of three.
“It was a good win, but I thought that we were slow to react in the first half,” said the Milford man. “We had a good start and maybe we took the foot of the pedal after that, and it is something we will need to take a look at.
“We struggled poorly on their kick-outs in the first half and on our own as well, to get them away, and that is something to learn from.
“Their full forward Jake Whyte was impressive in the first half and caused us problems. This is his second year as a minor and he has really come on and you could see it out there today”.
He added: “The biggest disappointment in the first half was that we could have had five or six points more on the board and we had a great goal chance at the start and that is disappointing as at the top level you don’t get those chances.
“And if we get through in the opening round of the championship, we would be meeting Cavan again. We are under no illusions and Cavan are a quality side and their inside line were good as was their midfield”.
On the plus side for Donegal, Owen Scott and Shane Callaghan got the vital scores in the second half and Donegal’s defence kept Cavan scoreless for a full 25 minutes.
“We have been working on our defence and that is the way the game is going, and we would be disappointed with the way we conceded that goal in the first half.
“But overall, it was good to keep Cavan scoreless for 25 minutes. And we took our scores well in the second half”.
Next up for Donegal is Sligo in Ballybofey and this is a real opportunity for Barrett to give other players a chance as they eye a probable League final.
“It was good to win today, but there is still room for improvement”.
