Promotion-chasing Burt made light work of Robert Emmet’s at Castlefin on Saturday evening when they recorded a straightforward victory.

It's a painful-looking scoreline, but there are two tiers within the Third Division: the top half dozen clubs who come into the season with aspirations of promotion, and the next half dozen for whom the matches against their peers are the stick by which they measure themselves. Burt fall in the former category, Robert Emmet’s into the latter.

Playing downhill at Páirc Eiméid, the home team opened the scoring through a Jordan McKinney free, with Ronan McDaid adding a point from play in the ninth minute to tie the game up at two apiece.

County hurling captain Conor Gartland got the first of Burt’s four goals in the tenth minute, taking a pass from Liam Óg McKinney and barrelling through to drop kick to the net from close range.

Stephen O’Donnell hit his second point of the night shortly after, but a Jordan McKinney two point free kept the Emmet’s in touch at 1-3 to 0-4 with 16 minutes gone.

However, Burt dominated the rest of the half and points from Gartland, McKinney (2), Calvin Gallagher, Dara Donaghey and three from Mark McElhinney, including a two point free, had them 1-11 to 0-4 ahead at the break.

Robert Emmet’s faced into a real uphill task after the change of ends.

Sean McHugh hit a two-pointer from play to get Burt up and running and it continued from there, with only a Jordan McKinney free interrupting their flow and the visitors had seven different scorers in the second half.

Calvin Gallagher rounded the keeper for a 35th minute goal, while corner forward Dara Donaghey twice found the net as gaps opened up in the Robert Emmet’s defence.

Substitute Shayne Gallagher hit three points, McHugh finished with four, while Liam Óg McKinney, Keith McColgan and Stephen O’Donnell also got in on the scoring act.

The final score of the night came from the boot of Robert Emmet’s corner back Rory Dalton who fired over a two point free with 59 minutes on the clock.

That’s six wins from six outings for Burt and they, along with Red Hugh’s are the only unbeaten sides in Division 3 and strongly favoured for promotion.

Robert Emmet’s will host Letterkenny Gaels next Saturday, while Burt are home to basement side Moville.
