Naomh Conaill and Glenswilly, two of the heavyweights in Donegal football, meet in the semi-final of the Donegal Comórtas Péile Na Gaeltachta this weekend.

The arch rivals meet in the second of the last four games which are on this Sunday in Downings, who are are hosting the Donegal finals for the first time since 2006.

This weekend’s Donegal finals are a dress rehearsal for the All-Ireland finals of the Comortas Péil Na Gaeltachta, which are also being staged in Downings.

The All-Ireland finals of Comórtas Peil Na Gaeltachta are on the June Bank Holiday weekend.

It is Division One versus Division Two in the other senior semi-final where Gaoth Dobhair, second in the top division, face Naomh Columba, fourth in the second division.

“We are looking forward to the weekend and some good football,” said Hugh McClafferty, Downings PRO and chairman of a special club committee appointed for the All-Ireland Comórtas finals.

“There are a number of good teams in the senior competition with Naomh Conaill, Glenswilly, Gaoth Dobhair and Naomh Columba.

“And there are also a number of good teams in the junior, too, and the ladies final between Termon and Glenfin should be a real good game too. All we need now is the weather so it is fingers crossed.

“This weekend’s final is a dress rehearsal to some extent for the All-Ireland finals but obviously not on the same scale in terms of games or number of teams. But still it is good to have it because we hope to open the main pitch which has been closed for a couple of years for a number of games.

“We also have built two new dressing rooms and they will be in operation too at the weekend.”

The senior ladies final meeting of the reigning champions Glenfin and Termon is the first action of the weekend. It is on Saturday evening. (6 pm)

Sunday is a busy day starting with the U-14 final involving Dungloe and Glenfin, throwing in at 11 am.

The first of the junior semi-finals sees hosts Downings take on a strong Kilcar side. That game has a 1 am start. It is followed by the second of the junior semi-finals where Gaeil Fhánada lock horns with Ardara. (2.30 pm)

This game is followed by the first of the senior semi-finals and the meeting of Gaoth Dobhair and Naomh Columba at 4.30 pm.

And the big game of the day between Naomh Conaill, the reigning champions, and Glenswilly in the second semi-final is timed for 6 pm.

There are four finals on Monday starting with the Ladies Intermediate final meeting of Milford and Gaeil Fhánada at 10 am.

This game is followed by the Ladies junior final where Downings face Naomh Columba at 11.30.

The junior men’s finals is timed for 1.30 pm with the senior final set for 3.30 pm.
