An open invitation has been extended to come to the day, which will take place on Saturday, September 19

The St Eunan’s College Leaving Cert class of 1996 are planning their 30-year reunion, taking place on Saturday, September 19.

Three decades after they exited the gates for the last time, former students from the Class of ’96 are being invited back to their old Alma Mater for a day of reminiscing and recollection.

Over the Summer, a WhatsApp group chat was set up to provide the necessary platform for would-be attendees and already, the response has been overwhelmingly positive from many former students and the chief organisers (Fergal McFadden, Kieran Kelly, Eamonn Ferry, Paul Browne and Gary Mc Daid) are looking for more former classmates to get in touch and confirm their attendance.

“It would be such a shame if we accidentally missed out on anybody,” says Fergal, “and we have put in every effort possible to track down the lads – through Facebook, WhatsApp, LinkedIn and whatever else, but there are still a few that we have yet to get in touch with.”

“The responses have been amazing so far, with many of the lads catching up with each other on the WhatsApp group,” continues Fergal. “Several men live abroad now, in the United States or Australia, or even down the country and are unable to make it but anyone who is available is more than welcome to attend. And we’re not being strict on the ’96 thing either! Because of repeats or Transition Year, etc., those who sat it in either ’95 or ’97 are more than welcome too, of course. Nobody will be turned away!”

After meeting at the front door of the College at 2pm on Saturday, September 19, the class will have their photo taken together before going down to the Chapel where a special Remembrance Mass will be held to honour those former students from that year who are sadly no longer with us. Following that, there will be a tour of the College grounds, looking at the old photographs that still adorn the walls, with tea, coffee and sandwiches afterwards to catch up with each other. In the evening, the class will move down to Blake’s Bar where no doubt the 1990s tunes will be bopping, and the craic will continue.

“It has been three decades since we sat our Leaving Cert exams. It’s finally time to reconnect, reminisce, and see where life has taken the class of ’96!” says Gary McDaid. “Join us back in The College for an afternoon of catching up, shared stories, and plenty of laughs!”

If you are one of those who plodded through those gates at Sentry Hill - or even sneaked out of them to avoid a certain class or classes! - and want to meet up with your fellow students from the era, you can contact Fergal McFadden on 087 2895562.
