Historian John McCarron will lead participants on a guided walk exploring Buncrana's historic stone landmarks as part of Inishowen Heritage Festival 2026.

History enthusiasts are being invited to step back in time and discover the stories behind some of Buncrana's most iconic landmarks during a special guided walking tour as part of this year's Inishowen Heritage Festival.

The Stone Built Heritage of Buncrana walk will take place on Tuesday, August 18, beginning at 7pm at the Stone Jug, and will be led by local historian John McCarron.

Participants will explore Buncrana's historic streets and learn about the town's remarkable heritage, visiting landmarks including O'Doherty's Keep, Buncrana Castle, Castle Bridge, and the remains of Richardson's Mill, which stood on the site of Swan Park.

The guided tour will examine how these historic stone structures, from medieval strongholds to buildings that played a central role in everyday life, helped shape the development of Buncrana and continue to define the town today.

Those attending are advised to wear suitable outdoor clothing and comfortable walking shoes. As the event takes place outdoors, it may be cancelled in the event of severe weather, with registered participants to be notified by email if necessary. Organisers have also advised that dogs are not permitted on the guided walk.

The event forms part of Stories in Stones, a programme within Inishowen Heritage Festival 2026, which celebrates the rich history and heritage of the peninsula through a series of talks, walks and community events.

Bookings for the guided tour can be made at The Stone Built Heritage of Buncrana | Stories in Stones via Eventbrite.
