Comrades in arms - Members of the Killybegs Coastguard Unit pay tribute to Michael Love after 27 years of service
A heartfelt farewell to a very special member of the Killybegs Coast Guard Team culminated in a special tribute last night at the coastguard facility based in the new harbour.
It was to mark the occasion of Michael Love retiring from the Killybegs Coast Guard after 27 years service to the communities throughout south West Donegal.
Michael rolled up the sleeves over the near three decades of dedication and fulfilled every role possible within the Coast Guard Unit. He served as Deputy Officer in charge and in more recent times, he was the Officer in charge of the unit.
Acting Officer in charge, Shane McCrudden said that it had been an absolute privilege to work as his Deputy since 2016.
He told donegallive.ie:
"Michael joined 27 years ago. It was a different environment when he joined back then. The role was the same and the goal was the same, that never changes but over the years the gear got better, the stations have got better. He was an incredible officer in charge.
"He was very cool. It did not matter whether you were dealing with a routine call out like towing a boat in perfect weather or dealing with a worst case scenario. His one goal for the team was the safety of the team."
In a heartfelt tribute the local crew said that they were all very saddened to see him leave.

"Michael's skills and knowledge have been passed on to many current and past members. His cool, calm and professional approach to every situation he encountered was second to none.
"We are very saddened to see Michael retire, but he has left us with the knowledge that has shaped our team and this will stand by us as a unit. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Michael's family for all their support and understanding, it is much appreciated.
"Michael, we wish you a happy and healthy retirement and all the best for the future. Michael you are a leader, a confidante, a great colleague and a forever friend."
Among those who paid tribute to him online were members of the Kilcar Parish Council who said:
"Good luck Michael, and thank you very much for the help and work you have done in your central role of the community, in the Irish Coast Guard."
