Gola Island
A Gola islander has said the number of homes which have electricity has greatly increased since the early 90’s.
Eddie Joe McGee said he can remember when only a small number of homes were serviced with electricity at the begining of the 90’s but he is delighted now to see that now over thirty homes have electricity.
He told a meeting of Coisten na n-Oileán and council officials that homes on the island were given fire extinguishers recently, speaking in Irish he said: “We were given fifty-six fire extinguishers recently.”
Mr McGee did note that work had been carried out on the public toilet on the island but added that he felt the work around the facility was not finished. He said the area outside the toilet needed to be landscaped and put in order.
He said that it was a pity that since machinery was on the island that this work couldn’t be carried out at the earliest possible convenience rather than trying to get the work done at a later date. Islanders often have trouble getting machinery onto islands.
“The toilet is open but it hasn’t been finished. It is a pity that when the machinery is there on the island that they don’t finish the landscaping around it.”
He also noted that there was a large number of visitors to the island this year but said it was a pity that the counter is no longer there so the islanders would know the numbers visiting the island.
