Public urged to act quickly if sheep is lying on its back

It is imperative that you act quickly if you see a sheep on its back as without swift intervention it may die, the Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District has warned.

Councillor Micheal McClafferty says that sheep can become victim to birds while on their back and that people need to know to help the sheep. Where possible, people are urged to find a farmer.

However, where this is not possible people are asked to approach the sheep as calmly as possible.

During this time of year, sheep are ready to lamb and are carrying heavy winter coats and find it hard to move. Cllr McClafferty appealed to hill walkers and those who may come across the sheep to help as losing a sheep is costly to farmers.

Cllr Michael McClafferty said: “Not all people understand when a sheep is on their back every second counts, before birds attack and destroy the helpless sheep. I am appealing to all hill walkers and visitors to be alert and get educated.”
